How we calculate
KeepWage estimates are built from official, primary tax sources and a transparent, documented method. Updated for the 2026 tax year.
Pay-period conversion
Full-time pay assumes 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours/year. Hourly → annual multiplies by 2,080; annual → hourly divides by 2,080. Bi-weekly uses 26 pay periods, weekly 52, monthly 12. You can change hours and weeks for part-time or unpaid-leave schedules.
Federal income tax (2026)
Brackets and the standard deduction come from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 (single, married filing jointly, head of household). Tax is computed progressively on income after the standard deduction.
FICA — Social Security & Medicare (2026)
Social Security: 6.2% on wages up to the $184,500 wage base. Medicare: 1.45% on all wages, plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax above $200,000 (single / head of household) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).
State income tax
California and New York use the latest published state brackets and standard deductions; California also includes State Disability Insurance (SDI) at 1.3% with no wage cap. Texas and Florida have no state income tax. We do not currently model local/city taxes (e.g. NYC), the California 1% surcharge over $1M, credits, or itemized deductions.
